Name: Langley Becker
Aliases: Captain-of-the-Line Becker, Captain Becker
Species: Hylian
Age: 30-ish
Gender: Female
Physical Appearance:
Background:
Born on a small village on the coast, Becker's life was already set to be one lived at sea. From a young age she learned fishing, spending most of her days off the shore casting nets and fishing lines. The simplicity of such life didn't satisfy her, and when she came of age she set out to see more of the world.
Her measly travel funds soon ended, and she had to seek out employment. Becker found herself working many odd jobs here and there in exchange for a place to stay or a meal, going about Hyrule and beyond in such a fashion for a few months before she landed a more lasting job in the Stratling Company, ultimately resulting in her being one of the individuals responsible for the security detail, a job that entailed many duties such as accompanying caravans, or escorting specific individuals through particularly troublesome parts of the world.
Eventually, however, having gone to many places and having met all kinds, she began to get involved with a certain...unruly side of things. Soon leaving Stratling behind, Becker was drawn to a life of piracy, finding much profit in raiding, smuggling and stealing, as opposed to keeping everything secure and locked tight. This phase went on for many years, as Becker gathered infamy and got herself involved with all kinds whilst hopping from boat to boat, crew to crew.
After a successful mutiny, she landed herself the position of captain of the ship. At first, the notion spelled absolute freedom to roam the world uninhibited by any bond or responsibility. Yet, the burdens of leadership soon began to pile up and sour what was at first a rather lofty dream. Maintaining a crew organized, loyal and healthy was far more work than it seemed from the sidelines, and now that she was at the top, it was a very bothersome thing. To make matters worse, though she was free in a sense, her pirate life had earned her infamy and made her many enemies, making several ports unsafe to stay on for too long, if not unsafe to even sail to.
It wasn't long before Becker fled, leaving that life behind before she was...forcibly removed from the position. With very little other places to go, she considered hanging her hat and returning home, sour as that premise sounded. At least she would grow old, and even if it didn't pay a lot, fishing was honest work.
Fortune smiled upon her, however. In the long, winding road back home she happened to stop on a small trader camp set in the Gerudo Desert. At first glance, there was nothing special to such a place, just some backwater in the middle of nowhere, and Becker wasn't expecting to be recognized.
A young sheikah approached her, asking if she was indeed the outlaw, Langley Becker, on whom the Hylian guard had put out a rather handsome bounty. Ready to lie her way out of the situation, she was caught off guard when he offered her a job, with the proposal of paying off her debts to society, thus earning her a pardon. But only if she would accept it.
Finding the notion too altruistic and unlikely, she was quick to ask what manner of job that was. It seemed her storied career, infamous though it may have been, had impressed him, and he found that Becker had a certain ingenuity and determination he believed was paramount for a good fleet captain. If she showed good faith and good results, he would supply her with ship and crew, all the logistics handled by the trading company itself. This was her chance to sail the seas unburdened by the worst aspects of command, even if at the beck and call of another.
Given her alternatives, Becker decided it was better than dying of old age in the backwater she called home, and accepted the offer. In a few months, she became the captain of the line for the company, and was given command of its flagship as a sign of trust in her professionalism.
As Soleil's endeavors expanded westward towards the Gerudo Desert, Captain Becker was entrusted with securing a good part of the eastern activities of the company. Though at first stationed patrolling the coastline whilst doing trading runs, she received orders to make landfall in Akkala, and establish a scouting camp deep within Hylian territory, close to Death Mountain itself. It would've seemed that tragedy befell the Goron, and her employer wanted her crew to keep an eye on the developments, and ensure that nothing that could be an issue for Soleil's plans is allowed to go on...
Relevance: Becker serves as a bridge between the champions' party and the influences of Mr. Soleil on the rest of the story, as well as being a foil for the group due to her slightly more amoral nature. Becker's past connects her with possible conflicts with other pirates and outlaws, and is thusly involved to some extent with the seedy underbelly of Hyrule.
Skill Set:
TSV Progress (Time-Shift Vessel Progress)
A privateer ship flying the flag of the Soleil Trading Company, and the flagship of their fleet at that. As such, it is equipped with a fairly unique bow mounted timeshift stone, allowing the ship to traverse the sand sea of long ago in the Gerudo Desert. Though primarily equipped for trading, it is fitted as a ship of the line, and as such it has cannon mounts for defense in naval incursions.
Abilities
Fire Support: When close enough to the shore, Captain Becker may signal the Progress to fire a volley at a designated target. Weather conditions and other factors that hinder visibility make the salvo more inaccurate, if not impossible depending on the situation.
Crew Assistance: Similarly to Fire Support, Becker may signal for the crew to come to her aid. This ability has a better reach than the fire support away from shore, but it takes a longer response time, given the crew has to travel all the way to the marked site. The crew are effectively decently trained sailors with pirate or mercenary backgrounds, but are in no way the sole solution to any engagement, merely a support and reinforcement.
Kargarok Cages: Used as trained messenger birds, the Kargaroks can deliver letters and small packages back and forth between the Progress and Becker's position. Becker carries a whistle to summon them for such endeavors.
The Successful Pirate's Code
While mostly guidelines, Becker is a firm believer that a truly good sailor of the seas needs be prepared to make do with anything on hand. As such, she has developed a penchant for improvisation, and may make use of such to jury-rig the most unlikely of combinations in order to fashion something usable to help her out of a tough spot, such as finding a sturdy rope and a solid counterweight to propel herself away from danger, or fashion some tool to make an escape from an entrapped position.
"Champion" Weapon: Arquebus
Becker wields a bayoneted arquebus as her weapon of choice, giving her range, accuracy and stopping power at the cost of speed. The munitions also give it some versatility, and the bayonet is left as a last resource, as Becker has very little interest in actually engaging anyone up close and personal.
Special Munitions
Signalling Load: Used mostly for interacting with the Progress, this allows Becker to fire a pouch that releases smoke that quickly rises up in the air forming a thin column.
Chuchu-Jelly Load: A fragile pellet filled with different kinds of Chuchu-Jelly, allowing them to release a short burst of elemental energy on impact (Fire, Ice or Thunder, depending on the jelly)
"Champion" Skill: Ensnaring Net
Becker's fishing background pays off in avoiding unfavorable engagements, as she has developed a knack for accurately throwing fishing nets, allowing her to hinder the movement if not outright entrap a foe.
Boss Summoning Apparatus
Or however it's truly called, this device Becker carries, crafted by Professor Vantian allows her to establish a direct line of communication with Mr. Soleil, allowing him to appear in the location in the form of a very convincing illusion, despite being quite far away, and unable to interact with objects physically. The device is thankfully small and portable, but requires some set up and a secure footing to allow its functionality. The device doesn't allow any other form of long range communication with anyone else, and thus Becker must rely on more conventional means most of the time.
